4 miles is a very useful training distance for many runners from 5k racers to marathoners. It's not as much of a time commitment as some of the longer endurance distances, but it's well into the zone where you have run long enough to get the benefits of an endurance run.

4 miles is 6.44 kilometers -- slight over-distance for training for the popular 5K race distance.

A four mile training run might be a long running for 5 K and shorter distance racers, while for half-marathoners and marathoners, it is probably near the shortest maintenance distance for a regular run.
