5 miles equals 8.04 kilometers, or less than 50 meters over 8K. 8K is the race distance for the USA Cross Country Championships for masters women, masters men, junior men, and open women races. 8K is also one of the two standard distances for men's college (collegiate) cross country racing, along with the 10K.

5 miles is also a very versatile training distance. Solidly into the endurance distance territory, it is over-distance for 5K racers, and a quite respectable maintenance run for 10K racers, half-marathoners, and marathoners.

Running 5 miles under 40 minutes (8 minutes per mile) may be a landmark for many runners, and likely corresponds to a fitness level approaching elite. Even a slower 5 miles can be a matter of pride, and allow you to confidently call yourself a runner!
